Object doesn't support property or method 'addEventListener' or Object doesn't support property or method 'getAttribute' Opening SharePoint sites with IE 11: SharePoint 2013

Issue: When you open a SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint 2010 site with IE11 you get an error message.

"Object doesn't support property or method 'addEventListener'".  Or
Object doesn't support property or method 'getAttribute'.....AT

Background: Some of the user had recently been upgraded to new versions of windows 8 and got IE 11 by default. However while opening the SharePoint site they get error message and when they close the error dialog box they hardly can do anything. Refreshing the page doesn't work.

Troubleshooting:
After doing all the basic checks we got to know that this is very common and wide spread issue people are facing and simple solution to this is run the site in IE compatibility mode.

Resolution:
1. Click the CLOSE button to close the error message - Find Internet Explorer options/tools - Choose Compatibility View Settings - Add URL of site - Accept changes and close - Refresh the page and try to open the site now.

2. If the issue existing, you can try to change the settings in Internet Explorer and check.

Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools - Click on Internet Options, click Advanced tab - Make sure there is a check mark for these options. "Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)" "Disable script debugging (Other)" - Uncheck "Display notification about every script error", click on Apply and Ok -  Restart the Internet Explorer and check the issue.

3. Try to disable enhanced protected mode and check.

Click the Tools icon in Internet Explorer - Go to Advanced tab and select the Security section and uncheck the checkbox beside Enable Enhanced Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer). - Click on Apply, and then click OK.

4. Also try to add the websites to trusted sites list and check.

Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools and then click on Internet Options - Click on the Security tab - Now click on Trusted sites and then click on sites button - Type the URL of the website in the text box and click on the Add button - When you’re done, click on close.

I hope at least one of the above given solution should work for you and when you open your site in SharePoint it should work for you.

If you have any difficulty in implementing the steps given above, do let me know I would be happier to help you.

Applies to: SharePoint Server 2013,    Internet Explorer 11.
